Article One:
· “30
Student, 3 Teachers in South Florida Return to School After Coronavirus Scare”
by Michelle Marchante on January 30, 2020
·
The article describes how 30 students and 3
teachers from a school in Palm Beach County took a trip to Yale University.
They were there for the weekend for Yale’s Model United Nations conference, but
their trip was cut short when Yale found out that a high school student from
China was showing symptoms of the coronavirus. The Chinese student was sent to
the hospital and tested positive for influenza, not the coronavirus. The 30
students and 3 teachers who returned from Yale were asked to stay home while
the CDC ran tests on the student from China.
·
The problem is the coronavirus outbreak.
Many people are taking cautions so this deadly if not treated in time virus doesn’t
spread.
·
The people who have this problem in the
article are the staff, students, and visitors at Yale. The 33 students and
teachers who visited Yale. The families of the students and teachers who
visited Yale.
Article Two:
· “Flax
Seed Fiber Sold Nationwide, Including Walmart in 23 States, Recalled for
Salmonella” by David J. Neal on January 31, 2020
·
The article describes that the bran Salud
Natural uses Senna leaves powder in their flax seed products. The FDA tested
the Senna leaves they use and found three different strands of Salmonella. The
flax seed product has been recalled, but Walmart sells this product in 23
states. To fix their salmonella problem, the company has started to use
different Senna leaves in their product.
·
The problem is that people are more
likely to get Salmonella from this product because the company was not careful
with testing the ingredients they use. It could be detrimental to peoples’ health.
·
The people who have this problem are avid
users of this product. The product is only sold in 23 states, so the people who
live in these places are more likely to have this problem. Additionally, the
article mentions that the most vulnerable people to this Salmonella problem are
children under 5 years of age, senior citizens, and people with damaged immune
systems.
Article Three:
· “Another
165,000 Infant Sleepers Over Four Brands Recalled in response to Infant Deaths”
by David J. Neal on January 30, 2020
·
The article states that in recent times, infant
deaths have become more common in specific types of infant sleepers. Most
commonly, the inclined sleep products. The infants roll onto their stomach or
on their side and aren’t able to flip onto their backs, causing them to suffocate.
While deaths haven’t been associated with the infant sleepers in the article,
companies are still recalling a total of 165,000 sleepers from the market for
fear of their brand name being tarnished.
·
The problem is that infants are dying due
to faulty infant sleepers and not being watched by their parents. Companies are
having to pull their products for fear of infant death and lose their revenue.
·
The people who have this problem are the
companies, the manufacturers, and the parents of infants who are in need of
sleepers or who have lost an infant to a sleeper.
Article Four:
· “Downtown
Pays for Look at Closing Some Biscayne Boulevard Lanes” by Catherine Lackner on
January 28, 2020
·
The article describes that Miami’s Downtown
Development Authority wants to make “Biscayne Green Week”. This “Green Week”
involves transforming parking lots into creative areas, with picnic benches,
playgrounds, a dog park and also creating sitting areas, green spaces, art
installations, a place for live performances, and other attractions. The author
notes that this demonstration attracted almost 17,000 people to the area. In
creating this “Biscayne Green”, the Miami Downtown Development Authority considers
closing two traffic lanes and over 100 parking spaces on Biscayne. The Miami
Parking Authority is expected to lose $1.5 million from the removed parking
spaces. The traffic in the area will be higher than it already is, causing
people to be late or aggravated.
·
The problem here is that lanes will be
closing, parking spaces will be removed, and already horrid traffic in this
Miami area will boom.
·
The people who have this problem are the
people who commute to work along this road. The people who park in the 100+
parking spaces that are being removed (and not replaced). And visiting this
area is meant to be fun because of the “Biscayne Green Week”, but visitors will
be frustrated with the amount of traffic in the area.
Article Five:
· “Florida
Faces Potentially Crippling Nursing Shortage” by Catherine Lackner on January 07,
2020
·
The article introduces statistics from the
Florida Center for Nursing, saying that Florida will face a registered nurse
shortage by 2025. They also explain that this shortage could cause our healthcare
system to cripple. The author describes that there is a shortage of experienced
nurses, and nurses in specialized departments. Facing the biggest crisis is the
shortage of nurses in nursing homes. As a solution, some hospitals are hiring
newly graduated nurses and training them in some of the specialized departments.
·
The problem is that there is a shortage
of nurses in Florida. The specific problem is that nurses in nursing homes and
other specialized s=departments are sparse. People will not be able to get the
help they need, and the nurses that are currently in the position need more
help than they’re getting.
·
The people with the problem are Florida
residents, current nurses, hospital staff, people placed in these departments
with nobody to look after them; specifically, older people in nursing homes
with no nurses to take care of them.
Hi Madison,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading all of the local opportunities you found news articles about and listed. I think that number four, the story about the removal of lanes and parking spaces, is especially interesting because of how many people that will be affected. This will create a need for these people: parking spaces and more effective transportation methods. There is definitely an opportunity there.
Hi Madison,
ReplyDeleteThe local news you are looking for is so great, especially when it comes to life safety and health. We may get a lot of opportunities from it, but these problems have been facing for a long time and we cannot make a quick decision for the time being, but we should act, watched and guarded by more people. Regarding China's new type of coronavirus, this time is menacing. I hope that everyone can take precautions against it and not take it lightly.
